Augarten, Vienna
The power of a concrete monolyth leaving people in determination and helplessness for decades can be seen from the Leitturm in Viennas oldest barock garden called Augarten. The solid construction was built during World War II and, with its brutal architecture, represents all the negative events from this time.
As a result of these, its been seen as ugly and unwanted and therefore as a refused heritage.
Surrounded by rich Augartens vegetation, the Flakturm still remains empty, lonely and silent.
A memorial place with a museum underneath should, without any external intervention, finally give this monolyth a new function by animating it and opening it up to public, inviting them to join in and discover more about the Flakturm itself and its history.
